This Memorial Day our family will place flowers on the graves of loved ones who have passed. It is a gray day, the rain is scattered, the birds silent, and the feeling somber for many reasons.
Memorial Day means many different things to many different people, but let’s not forget the original meaning – to honor the men and women in the military who died serving their country. I think it also fair to say that we should also honor fallen police, firefighters, teachers, heath care providers and others who have sacrificed so much in these difficult times.
The idea of public service, means, to me, setting aside one’s own material interests at least for a time and focusing only on the well-being of others. Sometimes the cost is extreme.
